The pantone color was developed in 1996, by researchers at Brown University and MIT, and is used in all major colors until 2018, when the Pantone Colour System will be switched to its current hue as it becomes available.

The pantone palette uses a "colour of the year" system as well as different "blooms" and is now available internationally:

Colouring the Pantone

Each year from now, the number of new colour combinations will be increased to 11 new colours. These colour schemes are intended to help inform people who are looking to decide on colour schemes. There is now more than 5,300 combinations at the Pantone Colour School in Nairobi.

The main colour schemes are based on the same basic colour schemes that have been in use for about 30 years. These combinations should be followed by combinations with several other color schemes.

Nairobi will have 1,200 new colour schemes available in 2022, starting with 18,000 in 2018 and rising, and 11,000 in 2021.

New versions of the Pantone Colour System will be available for purchase every second year.

The scheme has already been available worldwide since 2001 and has been used to select new colours that meet the criteria set out on the Pantone Colour Handbook.
