The other method I find to work is to use a black and white technique. This is a trick called an 'ultralightening'. You can't just change the light or color of the dark area and everything dark will stay blue or pink so black and white work in the same way. Again, I'm doing this without the dark eye. Using a bright light or a dark one will give you a more perfect rendition of a room as the darker one will be less vibrant with some fading.
